The book provides a fundamental and holistic overview of the extended reality (XR) industry in Germany. Extended Reality (XR) is the umbrella term for all immersive technologies that create computer-generated environments and objects and exchange or combine them with our real world. In other words, virtual worlds that are currently opening up completely new interaction potentials and business models, not only in the gaming sector. Such immersive technologies will be of interest to almost all areas of life and business in the future.

This work is the result of an initiative by the editors to establish an open XR-Thinktank within the German immersive media industry as a dynamic exchange community of heterogeneous actors and stakeholders. The book aims to classify the topic and substantiate its relevance using case studies from various industries and expert interviews.

Extended reality is a future technology that has become increasingly important over the last few years through the use of virtual and augmented reality applications and is used in many large companies in a wide variety of scenarios, including product development, employee training, remote device maintenance, sales and marketing, and in HR departments.

These immersive technologies, linking our reality and the digital world, will be of interest in almost all areas of life and business in the future. Currently, our media are certainly at the forefront, but everyday work and soon the environment and cities will follow. All of our lives are becoming increasingly digital. With new extended reality (XR) developments in hardware and software, these digital data spaces can be visited, designed, and distributed.
